According to one Italian study, nearly half (48.5%) of those who drink energy drinks combine them with alcohol. Adding alcohol to an energy drinkĪpparently, it’s not all that unusual for people to add alcohol to their energy drinks. Energy drinks help them achieve that goal. And when people go to a club to dance and party, they don’t want to stay for half an hour, they want to keep going all night. People drink them here, there and everywhere, often at parties and raves, in bars and at clubs. They say it gives them a boost and helps them stay awake. But a good third (34%) of people 18-34 drink energy drinks regularly. Everyone drinks them!Įasy now, maybe not everyone. Simply put, it’s an amino acid found in ox bile (there’s that bull again) and now being manufactured synthetically.ĭespite its fancy name, glucuronolactone is just an ordinary chemical compound produced naturally in the human liver when glucose is metabolized. On the other hand, energy drinks do contain taurine and glucuronolactone. Energy drinks do not contain bull sperm or bull urine. Of course not! It’s just an urban legend. Some brands contain as much as 500 mg, or the equivalent of 6 cups of coffee! All by themselves, without alcohol, such drinks can be dangerous because they increase the risk of caffeine poisoning, which is all the more likely in young people, whose bodies are less used to caffeine and less tolerant of its effects. Why? Because energy drinks are packed for quick consumption: you drink them cold and down them in a few swallows, whereas coffee is usually served hot and sipped more slowly.Īnd watch out! Not all energy drinks have the same amount of caffeine. Except that you’ll feel the impact of the caffeine in an energy drink much more quickly than the caffeine in coffee. Young people like energy drinks for the same reason they like coffee: for their stimulant effect.īut beware! Both energy drinks and coffee contain caffeine.

(Services that will locally encrypt the data you store on cloud storage services to make them more secure have sprung up, such as Boxcryptor, but they obviously inject more steps into the process - making it more arduous again.) That off-putting hump continues to dissuade lots of people from switching from an easy to use service like Dropbox to something that’s more demanding like SpiderOak.ĭropbox made this point when it responded to Snowden’s criticism about its attitude to privacy last week - by effectively saying it had to balance usability and a rich feature-set with security robustness - telling users that want more security to add it themselves, via (yet another) a third party service. Now the problem for individuals wanting to dial up their security to this more secure level has typically been a trade off in usability. Ergo it’s a more pro-privacy third party service, given that we know our governments are doing all the digital snooping they can. In other words, client side encryption puts a stop to sneaky backdoor methods for mass eavesdropping on individual user data by compromising the third party service provider. ![]() The user also holds their own encryption key - again, meaning the service provider can’t decrypt their data, since they don’t have access to the key. That means that even if forced to hand over user data - by a government agency, say - the provider is still only handing over securely encrypted information, so the snooper would be forced to procure the key directly from the user. ![]() This is achieved by doing local encryption (aka client side encryption), on the user’s own device, before uploading any data to the provider’s cloud - as Peak Drive will. ‘Zero knowledge’ means the service providers don’t have access to the customer data they’re storing. Snowden specifically name-checked the long-time security-focused cloud storage service SpiderOak. “It’s the one cloud storage where it’s kind of easy to set up collaboration - so, a shared folder for example - and therefore we think word of mouth will be stronger than for services like SpiderOak.”Įarlier this month NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden slammed cloud storage giant Dropbox as “ hostile to privacy” - and suggested web users who care about protecting their data from prying eyes and snooping governments would be better using a ‘zero knowledge’ alternative. “The usefulness of Peak Drive over other secure cloud services lies in collaboration,” he adds. But Peak Drive is different because all the data that is stored inside it will be encrypted directly on the users’ devices.” “This is what it feels like for the user - so it feels like Dropbox. “Peak Drive behaves for the user like Dropbox, in terms of it’s a cloud storage where you have files on your desktop device or laptop or smartphone, and every file you put in there is syncronized with our servers and therefore syncronized to your other devices where you are logged in as well,” says Blaesing. ![]() That’s what will set it apart from similarly secure Dropbox rivals, he argues. The team is also focused on making sure convenient collaboration features, such as the ability to share a folder with one or more users, are not edited out of the service because of its security focus. The new kid on the secure cloud storage block is called Peak Drive, and it’s due to launch this September - initially for Mac and iOS - after being developed as a side project last year by a couple of German physics students attending Heidelberg University.Ī core focus for Peak Drive‘s bootstrapping team, who came up with the idea for the service back in February 2013 - just before Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks revealed the extent of government security agencies’ digital snooping - is ease of use and accessibility to the average consumer, says co-founder Marius Blaesing. And yes, the usability proof of the pudding will be in the eating. So yes, this is a ‘cake and eat it’ type claim. Yet this startup is also shooting to be as usable as Dropbox - and therefore more user friendly than other security-focused cloud storage services that do local encryption. A new German cloud storage startup is preparing to launch a service it bills as more secure than Dropbox, thanks to offering client-side encryption (which Dropbox does not). ![]() Jean Feldman for permission to display these lyric excerpts. ![]() See more of our Social Studies and Geography Song Lyrics Pennsylvania girl I'm in some Carolina South Dakota Tennessee ten winter morning West Virginia wisdom I know I'm so pleased when I check it out this afternoon 15 96 from 13 original car I'm here show them scallop tunnel without what I want to begin our day to every state in the good old you ever. However, if the similarities to a router, combined with less support for multiple devices, are something you can live with, a modem could meet your needs. Most people use their home network to access the Internet, but many have no idea how these networks work. If you’re a multi-device household, you won’t go wrong by paying a higher price for a router. Modems have primarily been replaced by routers or router/modem combination devices. With modems dating back to when there were fewer connected devices, heavy-duty Internet users need something different. Modems are still used in many households, especially when mobile devices connect through a cellular network instead of a home network. Spectrum Router vs Modem: Which One is Better? Which One Should You Use? Users can expect to keep modems longer than routers. Providers may use either coaxial or fiber-optic technology to provide an Internet connection.īesides the price, are there advantages to using a modem instead of a router? One of the advantages of a modem is that the technology updates much more slowly than that of a router. The earliest modems that cable providers used to date back to the early 2000s. Unlike the dial-up modems of previous times, modern modems work independently of phone lines. Everything works a lot more smoothly with the right connected device. Weighing the pros and cons of a router from Spectrum reveals that a router reduces the chances of having to deal with buffering. Home workers also find decreased speed frustrating. When content buffers, this is an exasperating situation for users. With a router, the devices “talk” to each other on a local network instead of communicating over the Internet.īuffering is one of the most common problems that heavy data users run into with lower speeds. ![]() Such speed is essential for gamers and streaming service users. Routers allow devices to take advantage of Spectrum’s best plans with the top gig speeds. When there is no router, all the devices connect directly to the Internet, possibly affecting speeds. These types of devices cannot use a modem without your having to sacrifice connectivity here and there. With most households having any combination of cellphones, tablets, and gaming systems, there is a need for greater connectivity. Wired routers require a hard connection between the router and the devices. The wireless routers rely on antennas built into the devices to transmit the signals. One of the biggest differences that arose between modem types was the presence of hard-wired versus wireless routers. Routers would allow other devices to access the same network as your computers, eliminating the need to establish separate connections for these devices. Today’s routers became popular when more Internet customers started using broadband Internet. The International Networking Working Group, founded in 1972, focused on network connections, part of which would later lay the foundations for Internet connection technology. ![]() At the time, these functions were performed by computers. The foundations for what would later become a router date back to 1966-1967, under the influence of Donald Davies and Wesley Clark. You may rent a router from spectrum for a reasonable price, but not a modem. ![]() Modems provide a wired Internet connection using Ethernet only, while routers may also offer HDMI and Bluetooth connectivity in addition to Ethernet.Using a router allows you to connect additional devices, such as mobile phones and tablets.Routers provide access to Spectrum’s GIG plan that’s perfect for households that use a lot of devices.Modems offer speeds of up to 400 Mbps, while the routers offer a maximum speed of 2,000 Mbps.Modems are less expensive than routers because they only provide a connection to the Internet, not additional devices.Spectrum Router vs Modem: Six Must-Know Facts Spectrum Router vs Modem: Side-by-Side Comparison If you want to learn more about these devices, including their pros and cons, read on to learn more. ![]() A short answer to the differences is that a router can broadcast a Wi-Fi signal to multiple devices. A Spectrum router and modem might sound like the same thing, and although there are similarities, there are also key differences. ![]() I forgot, I'm using a Ring of Constitution +5 (which is fairly standard) and a RoS +4. High Elf Rangers are a class with a lot of options to deal with situations and a lot of fun to play. Arrows I reserve for the toughest fights or ones where I have no desire to get close to the monsters (such as life draining Undead). I'm using Theoden for the Telepathy and swap in Haradekket for tough melee fights. I'm using Thorin (shield) for the Acid Immunity to protect my arrows I haven't found many Mithril ones yet (which can't be destroyed by Acid/Fire). This basically gives you an infinite supply of Elemental Brand arrows along with huge to-hit bonuses. The important one for Rangers is Tenser's Transformations which I don't have yet. Ordinary (+0, +0) arrows are at just over 300, but still pretty darn nice.Īnyway, stats are all maxed and I have 825 HP. Why is this important? Well, I just looked and with those 4 shots in a single attack round, I can do over 1100/round with arrows of Slay Dragon. This means that with Belthronding, which I just found as my first artifact bow of the game, my Ranger gets 4 shots. Level 40 is significant because Rangers get an extra shot with bows (not crossbows) at L20 and L40. I've hit level 40 and I'm down on level 50 or so of the dungeon. I've been playing a High Elf Ranger instead of the Hobbit Rogue. This left me at +32 when Hasted and made me slightly faster than the big 'M'. ![]() Then I swapped out Stormwalker for some Boots of Speed +10 (+4 better than Stormwalker) to get me up to +22 while overloaded. But, dang, Aule makes killing Dragons *really* easy at 900 damage per round.Īlmost forgot, for the final battle, I swapped in Eonwe since I wasn't going to melee Morgoth (look at what happened to Fingolfin. Oh, and if you're wondering, I did clear a few dozen of level 98/99 and didn't find Fingolfin, Ringil, or the One Ring. I was originally thinking of going for the Hobbit Rogue but maybe I'll try the High-Elf Ranger again. So that makes wins with a Dwarf Priest, a Gnome Mage, and a Half-Troll Warrior. Once he gets close, Teleport him away and start over again. As Morgoth approaches, hit him with ranged attacks (such as sling bullets or zaps from Wands of Annihilation), if he Summons creatures use Banishment/Mass Banishment scrolls immediately. ![]() Be on one end of the map at the edge of a large room. Or I could just hang out down here for a bit to try to find Fingolfin, Ringil, and the One Ring. Now I need to go upstair and pick up the Sling of Buckland/Mithril Shots of Holy Might along with the Wands of Annihilation for a little Morgoth crushing. I only had to chug a few potions before he bit the dust. I dug an Anti-Summoning tunnel, bumped up to +31 Speed, activated Bladeturner for the huge to-hit bonus, finally remembered to drop my Wands of Teleport Away (since Sauron drains charges), and then just smacked Sauron with Aule. Since I had Nether resistance from Bladeturner, I no longer needed it from the boots and with Nenya, I was at 12:200 DEX which is enough to get me to the full 6 attacks/rd (Warriors get up to 6 with ordinary weapons). Swapped in Stormwalker for the Lightning Immunity and the +6 Speed compared to the +5 Speed of Dal-I-Thalion. Got rid of my Staves of Banishment and swapped in 10 each of Scrolls of Banishment/Mass Banishment. I tweaked my gear so that I had a base of +21 while using Aule. ![]() The ES-3000 is capable of operating in a two-speed mode. /rebates/2fb2fHeating-Venting-Cooling-Fans-Whole-House-Fans2fQuietCool2fN-5yc1vZc4kkZexd&. As they sit waiting at the tiny airport for a delayed flight to Glasgow, they get drawn into the Stranger’s story-telling, and, in the process discover unexpected affinities. The story that he tells is one of his own, the last in his “Once in Europa” collection, about a chance meeting of two lovers-to-be at a Festa de l’Unita on the Venetian island of Giudecca, one of the couple being a cattle farmer from inland, the other a shopworker from the city.Īs well as being narrated in Berger’s voice-over, this story is partly dramatised in the film, and is embedded in a second film-drama about strangers meeting on the Hebridean island of Barra. In this film, John Berger plays a leading role, that of a story-telling Stranger. One contributor to the event was Timothy Neat (artist, photographer, biographer, poet, historian, teacher, and expert in mushrooms and honey), who screened a film that he had made in 1989, “Play Me Something”. The Edinburgh event served as the best of obituaries, a multi-disciplinary and multi-genre affair, attended by a multiplicity of friends, including some who had never met the man, or corresponded directly with him, but who felt they knew him through the comradeship of his works, as Gunaratnam described. You will also find voices raised in hostility to John Berger’s memory – as in Michael Henderson’s obituary, for example, in “The Spectator” on 4th January – because, being anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist and fiercely combative all his life, in fact being “Permanent Red”, to quote the title of an early collection of his essays, Berger quite properly made enemies as well as friends. “Immersed in his story-telling and stories about him,” she explained, “I saw up-close what he meant by a story-teller’s hospitality, how language and writing can offer a sense of community.” Hope names a commitment to change the world.” And there is Yasmin Gunaratnam’s obituary, written for “Red Pepper”, on 19th January. “It was hope,” he wrote, “that allowed Berger to write so beautifully. She concluded that, “A reader coming anywhere near his work encounters life-force, thought-force – and the force, too, of the love all through it.” Then there is Jacob Brogan’s obituary, written for “The New Yorker” on 9th January. of international reach.Īli Smith’s obituary, written for “The Guardian” on 6th January, provides a good example. You only need to read a few of the obituaries that were published at the time to get a feeling for the fact that here was a friend to many, a giver and receiver of goodwill, as well as an artist, critic, story-teller, essayist, poet, dramatist, film-maker, etc. That member was John Berger, the Marxist critic, writer, and artist, who was not only honorary, but honoured, and also greatly loved. On 23rd February, 2017, in Edinburgh, an event was held by the Royal Scottish Academy, in commemoration of an honorary member who had died a few weeks earlier, on 2nd January, in Paris.
